Lattitude Volunteers in South Africa

Alvaro has recently returned from a six month Lattitude Gap Year placement in Kosi Bay, South Africa. He was part of the first group of volunteers we sent over to South Afirca from New Zealand, so when he returned we were keen to find out more about his experiences, and how he got on.

Gap Year Connections

As some of you may know, on Wednesday a series of earthquakes and a Tsunami caused devastation around the Pacific rim, mainly in Samoa, American Samoa and Sumatra.
For most of the day New Zealand remained on Tsunami alert. Thankfully the waves which did eventually break on our shores were nowhere near as high as expected and minimal damage was incurred.

For the Lattitude team here in the office the morning was a hectic one. With 50+ volunteers in country we had a lot of people to try and contact very quickly. To add to this, almost all of our volunteers were on holiday from their school placements, so theoretically could have been anywhere in NZ or the Pacific.

It was a day which really proved how strong the network of connections made through Lattitude can be. Thanks to some quick fire texting, and volunteers passing on messages, within half an hour we had heard from most of our volunteers ensuring that they were safe and well.

Below is the link to a news article on the subject which features some of our volunteers:

Dear Sharyn, Dear Katie
Now that I am leaving New Zealand, I want to thank you.
Thank you for everything you did for us and all the Gappers! You are a brilliant team; you were always there for us and put all your effort in to helping us whenever we had problems. And man, we had a lot of fun with you guys at the orientation, the BBQ and whenever we met you! You are always happy and you have become like mothers’ to me in this foreign country.
I really had the time of my life so far, and you just made most of that possible! Keep it up, all the Gappers are lucky to have you here. Even though it’s a pity that we can’t see each other before I leave, the BBQ was a great farewell!
So, keep in touch and should you ever come to Germany, you are more than welcome.
I can’t thank you enough for everything!!! I will never forget you!
Lots and lots of Love,
Gesche
